Today I want to tell you about a specific category of herbs for your nervous systems: Adaptogens. The term adaptogen refers to the unique ability of these herbs to help you adapt to the stresses in your life. They do this by balancing your HPA axis stress response system, regulating the hormone cortisol, and reducing the physical impact of stress on our bodies and minds. They help improve your immunity and focus, stabilize your energy, and increase your resilience.
But not every adaptogen is equally suitable for everyone. If you choose an adaptogen that is too stimulating (such as Rhodiola or Panax Ginseng), this can just add fuel to your fire, causing your reserves to explode and burnout to come even closer. Then you are better off choosing a less stimulating but restorative adaptogen such as Ashwaganda, Schisandra and Eleuthero. It is always a matter of feeling what suits you at what time.
(And of course you also need to take into account other conditions, medication, pregnancy, ...! Then you look for a professional who can support you.)
