You know elderberries, they support the immune system, but what is an Oxymel?!
Well, that is actually a sweet and sour syrup in which herbs are processed. It comes from the Latin word oxymeli , where oxy stands for acid and meli for honey. Apple cider vinegar is often used as a base because it has many health benefits on its own and cold-pressed local honey is also a winner. Add a few powerful herbs to that and you get a major health tonic.
In this oxymel, besides Elderberries, there are also ginger and cinnamon. This makes for a wonderfully warming oxymel.
Why do you use Elderberry Oxymel?
First of all because it is delicious! It is a surprising combination of flavours, so much more interesting than a regular sweet syrup (based on water and sugar) you are surprised by a sour touch from the vinegar with an oxymel.
And also because it is healthy. This way you can give your natural resistance a nice boost every day. The disadvantage of regular elderberry syrup is that it has sugar as a preservative. With an Oxymel the preservatives are (apple cider) vinegar and honey, which are much healthier than sugar.
How do you use Elderberry Oxymel?
- Just like you would use Elderberry syrup: a dash in a glass of water. That way you can make a shot daily, for example.
- But you can also add it to your cup of herbal tea, when the tea has cooled down a bit, so you don't lose any of the health benefits.
- Or neat, straight on your tongue.
- And oxymels are also delicious to use as a salad dressing!
